Abstract
The science behind stamp characterisation and authentication is described concerning pigments and their chromophores, paper and additives as well as cancellation. Non-destructive analytical methods have been used like XRD, EDX, XRF, PIXE, FT-IR, IR-ATR, laser Raman microscopy, and visible light microscopy. Colour-forming molecular mechanisms are discussed as well as colour fading and chemically based colour changes. Proposals are derived for reducing altering processes.
