• Most Korean emergency department nurses lacked adequate forensic nursing knowledge. • Consequently, they were unprepared to provide appropriate forensic nursing care. • Simulation and continuous education methods were the most preferred by Korean nurses. • Country-specific forensic nursing education programs should be developed.
