Abstract

DNA profiling, as it is now known, was first described in 1985 by Alec Jeffreys and coworkers and it has had a tremendous impact on forensic genetics. Before that, all the forensic genetic casework (paternity testing, criminal casework, and individual identification) was performed using classical serological genetic markers.
