OVERVIEW: The number of U.S. RD namely, electronics, biotechnology and automotive. COUNTRY DISTRIBUTION Figure 1 (figure 1 omitted) breaks down foreign R&D facilities in the United States by country. The over 150 Japanese R&D facilities far outnumber the U.S. R&D facilities of other countries combined. European and South Korean companies own 95 and 15 R&D facilities in the U.S. respectively. Ten of the 15 South Korean facilities are owned by South Korea's largest chaebols (conglomerates), namely Samsung, Hyundai, Daewoo, and Lucky Goldstar. The large number of U.S. R&D facilities of Japanese companies partly reflects the relatively larger number of Japanese parent companies--62, compared with 42 European and 9 Korean parent companies. In addition, Japanese parent companies have more facilities per company than European parent companies. Japanese parent companies, like Sony, Matsushita and Fujitsu, have eight or more laboratories at different U.S. sites. Only one European company, Siemens, has a large number of R&D sites (15) in the United States. INDUSTRY DISTRIBUTION The electronics, biotechnology and automotive industries have the most foreign R&D centers in the U.S. Figure 2 (figure 2 omitted) shows the industry distribution of the R&D facilities from Japan, Europe and South Korea.
