Abstract

Most people in the United States and the other American nations learn about world events through the mass media rather than by direct contact; hence the foreign news coverage of the major newspapers can have a great influence on international relations. Here is a study of the amounts and kinds of foreign news carried in outstanding United States and South American dailies and a comparative analysis of the press treatment of foreign news. James W. Markham is Professor and Chairman of Graduate Studies and Research in the School of Journalism, Pennsylvania State University.
