Abstract

Abstract The article gives the definition and general characteristics of foreign direct investment (FDI). Main types of FDI are described. Key groups of investors are also identified. Then the most important theoretical concepts explaining the phenomenon of FDI are presented and dominant motives for FDI are singled out. The dynamics of FDI and modern geographical structure of FDI are also shown. Special attention is paid to main exporters and importers of FDI as well as top transnational corporations. The role of trans-shipping destinations is also mentioned and their place in official FDI statistics is analyzed. In the last section main features of state and international regulation of FDI are presented. The role of FDI in the world economy is also demonstrated.
