Abstract

At one time Guatemala was called a Banana Republic. The United Fruit Company owned the only railroad, the only public telegraph system, Puerto Barrios (the only Atlantic sea port), and 460,000 acres of arable land in the country. But today the situation is very different. The railroad and port have been sold to another United States company, the telegraph system is now owned nationally, and most of the Fruit Company's land has been sold. Criticism can no longer be leveled against one imperialistic foreign company. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
