Abstract

Education in its very essence works for the future. This assertion hardly requires any long-drawn-out attestations: it is confirmed by the entire history of human society down the ages; a vital social concern has always been the preparation of rising generations for life and for work. As Aristotle said over two thousand years ago, Now nobody would dispute that the lawgiver ought to devote special attention to the education of the young; for in those states where this subject is neglected, the very system of the state [gosudarstvennyi stroi in the unacknowledged Russian translation of Aristotle—Ed.] is undermined. Indeed, for every form of state system, appropriate education is a subject of primary necessity.
