Abstract

An Age-Old Dream — understanding all the forces of nature as different aspects of a single fundamental force — has actually been realized to some extent during the past decade. A theory that unifies two of the four known basic forces was successfully developed, thus merging the electromagnetic force that holds together atoms and molecules with the weak nuclear force that governs the decay of radioactive matter. A comprehensive theory of a third type of force, namely the strong nuclear force that binds subatomic particles, has also been developed. Furthermore, concerted efforts aimed at unifying in turn both of these theories are now being made at many laboratories around the globe.
