Abstract

In order to investigate the forces acting between surfaces covered by carboxylic acids, a mixed monolayer of eicosylamine and docosanedioic acid, with a mixing ratio 1:1, was deposited onto muscovite mica. The monolayer formed a condensed film, with carboxylic acid groups alternating with methyl groups directed outwards from the surface. The deposited monolayers were mounted in a surface force apparatus, and the forces between the surfaces measured as a function of distance in a range of aqueous divalent salt solutions. The forces were found to be dependent on the pH as well as on the type (CaCl 2 or CdCl 2) and concentration of the divalent salt.
