Abstract

The first experimental evidence of the diffusive character of the phase variable which describes the position of the convective rolls is presented. To produce a phase modulation a small alternating flow in a slightly supercritical fluid layer is injected. With use of this method, the diffusion coefficient ${D}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ concerning the propagation of phase disturbances parallel to the roll axis is measured.
