Abstract

This volume is the unique effort of bringing together the work of several graduating classes of the Refugee Studies Centre's Master's of Studies Degree in Forced Migration at the University of Oxford. First set up in 1998, the Master's Degree has seen successive, highly motivated, talented graduate students from all parts of the world and all walks of life attend this course. They have moved on to careers in humanitarian assistance, development aid, medicine, and further graduate study. This collection is predominantly based on the extended essays which were submitted as partial fulfilment for their Master's degree. They tackle a wide diversity of topics ranging from the UN convention relating to the status of refugees, the United Nations and the issue of internally displaced persons, to the examination of US immigration detention policy. Regional and single case studies range far and wide covering the social contract and refugee protection in Turkey and Germany, revitalizing the rights of forced migrants in Islam, durable solutions for Mozambique and Kosovo, repatriation and reintegration in Afghanistan and the protection of displaced persons in East Timor as well as the socio-legal conditions of Palestinian refugees in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.
