Abstract

AbstractMatched asymptotic solutions are given for the temperature profiles and heat transfer rates in laminar three‐dimensional flows with viscous dissipation. The results are asymptotically valid for small thermal diffusivity α; they hold for Newtonian or non‐Newtonian fluids. The fluid properties are evaluated at an average temperature for the system; this is satisfactory for moderate temperature differences. Heat transfer formulas for various thermal boundary conditions are included. Several examples are analyzed, including the frictional heating of a polymer melt in flow through a wire‐coating die.
