Abstract

Cardiac muscle cells develop more force if they are stretched before they are activated. The Ca2+ concentration that is required to produce half-maximal force also decreases. These effects are known as length-dependent activation and are thought to contribute to the Frank-Starling Mechanism. The precise mechanisms underlying length-dependent activation remain unclear. Kampourakis et al. (PMID 27162358) recently showed that increasing the length of cardiac muscle causes myosin head domains to adopt orientations that are more perpendicular to the thick filament axis.
