Abstract
Symmetrized G- matrix elements for the pyramidal XY 2Z molecular model are given. Force constants have been calculated for eleven mixed halides of phosphorus and two mixed halides of arsenic. An empirical relationship has been established for the. f py (Y = halogen) force constants with respect to the electronegativities of the halogen atoms. Until now no complete normal-coordinate analyses of mixed phosphorus and arsenic halides have been published. As Müller et al. 1 have recently studied the vibrational spectra of these compounds, it seemed to be of interest to calculate the force constants and discuss the results with respect to bond properties.
