Abstract

The problem of two opposite static electric charges confined in a MIT bag in two space dimensions is solved. The bag shape, electrostatic potential, and total energy are determined for arbitrary charge separation. The bag surface is smooth except for two cusps located along the line joining the charges. For large charge separations, the bag is cigar shaped and the total energy becomes linear in charge separation. The onset of this linear effective potential is seen to occur well before the limiting cigar shape is achieved.
