Abstract
Herniation of abdominal viscera into the thorax through the foramen of Morgagni is rare, accounting for less than 5% of all congenital diaphragmatic hernias. This type of hernia is usually asymptomatic and often diagnosed accidentally. We report a 71-year-old female patient with blunt trauma of the right thorax. The posteroanterior chest radiograph showed a large, well-defined mass at the right hemithorax. The lateral film localized the mass to the retrosternal area. The contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed the right retrosternal mass contained both omentum and colon, thus proving that it was a foramen of Morgagni hernia. The patient underwent surgical repair through an upper midline laparotomy. Four months later the followed chest film revealed no recurrence of the disease.
