<h3>To the Editor:</h3> With pleasure I counter. It would seem the questions come more from book knowledge than ring experience but are still of theoretical interest. A response gives the opportunity to jab, hook, and cross to the heart of this problem with some pertinent and concrete suggestions which should be considered for enforcement by the AMA. For me the serious paradox is not a boxer losing on a butt or even a plastic surgeon's suture prolonging a competition. It is that America, once individualistic, competitive, and rugged, is looking to a softer way, generally in a slide toward the welfare state and specifically in such cries as the one for the abolition of boxing. Why boxing? Why not car or motorcycle racing, football, mountain climbing, or any sport that poses a reasonable hazard? Those who have boxed know that it is a great sport, a character builder, and a
