Abstract
ABSTRACT The rehabilitation of incarcerated individuals is one of society's greatest challenges. Penal institutions, state hospitals, and mental health agencies are faced with the task of restoring people to levels of healthy productivity. This interview focuses on the rehabilitation of one ex‐resident of the San Luis Obispo County Jail in California. His reinstatement into sound citizenship was made possible by an on‐site developmental reading program in the prison. The discussion centers around the effects of reading and writing on culturally different youth. The questions elicit some poignant insights into the problems many young people confront as a result of never having achieved literacy.
