Abstract

The UK breast cancer screening programme based on the recommendations of the Forrest report was phased in from 1988 onwards. It aimed at the early detection of breast cancer in women aged 50-64 years and utilized single medio-lateral oblique view X-ray mammography as the sole screening test, carried out at three-yearly intervals. The report, based mainly on the findings of the HIP and Two County Swedish studies, claims that the method would be highly effective, sensitive and specific, and the cost would be reasonable. It further argued that screening, followed by appropriate treatment, could reduce deaths from breast cancer in women aged 50-64 years by 33 per cent or more.
