Abstract

Despite massive population movements caused by the political situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan teams of health workers and volunteers were able to vaccinate a total of 35 million children in both countries. Organized by the Taliban Health Ministry with assistance from WHO and UN Childrens Fund and with the cooperation of the opposition Northern Alliance the campaign is divided into two rounds. According to Dr. Naveed Sadozai WHOs polio team leader for Afghanistan teams of health workers on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border had been strengthened to cope with the huge numbers of people trying to leave Afghanistan. It is noted that due to the evacuation of international staff the polio team was made up solely of national staff. International staff orchestrated the effort from Pakistan. The immunization drive was said to be reaching its targeted levels.
