Abstract
What is a socialist position on the control and functioning of the mass media in Canada? What strategies should socialists pursue in relation to the existing media? What alternative policies and media should the Left propose and help to build? This paper argues that a socialist perspective on such questions requires moving beyond an instrumentalist focus on media ownership, to include an adequate understanding of ideology and audience-media relations.
