Abstract
The paper presents the design and construction of the new footbridge Studenci over the Drava River in Maribor. In 2004, the City of Maribor issued an open, anonymous national call for proposals for the reconstruction of the old bridge. In spite of the fact that it was an existing bridge that was to be reconstructed, the new bridge appeared in a new, entirely different, contemporary image. The existing old bridge structure of two steel I-shaped girders with concrete deck was replaced by a new, steel, transparent, space truss structure, with a wooden deck and linear LED illumination. Only the supports from the old bridge were preserved and these also were reconstructed and strengthened. The 'structural solution' as presented in this paper, received a Footbridge Award in 2008.
