Abstract

This article looks at the attempts during the 1970s and early 1980s between the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland to heal the split that had been in place in Irish soccer since 1921. These attempts were made against the backdrop of the Northern Ireland Troubles of 1968–1998. This paper explores the reasons why the talks took place at this juncture. It examines the main issues discussed at the conferences that took place from 1973 to 1980 between these national governing bodies for football and assesses the main factors leading to their ultimate failure.
