Abstract

July 6, 2022, saw the launch of the latest edition of the “State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” report. Jointly authored by several UN agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organisation, WHO, and the World Food Programme, the report outlined the disastrous effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on global levels of hunger and malnutrition. It noted that an estimated 828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021, an increase of 150 million since 2019. Almost 924 million people faced severe levels of food insecurity in 2021, 207 million more than in 2019.
