Abstract

The little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, is widely distributed and is found on the inhabited Galapagos Islands (Santa Cruz, Floreana, San Cristobal, Isabels), as well as uninhabited San Salvador. Studies of W. auropunctata behavior and competition with other ants were conducted during two climatic periods: the hot season and the cool or "garua" season. Observations were made monthly and the percentage of trees occupied by W. auropunctata and the other ants species was determined each month. In order to compare the activities of W. auropunctata with other ant species, we counted the ants on trees in each of the study areas over the two seasons. Observations of competition and displacement of W. auropunctata and other species of ants were made during experiments in which foods were offered to each ant species over 30 minutes in each zone except for Media Luna and La Caseta.
