Abstract

This is our 4th column on food science education publications and websites. Since our inaugural column in July 2006, we have received very few submissions from readers. As we did in the first column, we again invite readers to submit print or electronic resources that they would like to share with other readers. Please submit the full text of the article or the URL for the website and an annotation of not more than 100 words. We welcome your comments and resources. Material should be submitted to: Jim Bird, Science & Engineering Center, Fogler Library, Univ. of Maine, Orono, ME 04469 or e-mail Jim.Bird@umit.maine.edu. If e-mailing please put “JFSE submission” in the subject line. AgNIC is a network of almost 60 institutions offering agriculture and related information on a variety of subjects including food science (see http://www.agnic.org/). The calendar offers users a searchable database of upcoming conferences, meetings, and other events. A search on the word “food” brings up 152 listings over the next year. Included with each listing is a link to the event website. This issue of the British Food Journal is devoted to consumer education. It contains 7 articles on issues in food safety education. Articles include “Food hygiene education in UK primary schools: a nation-wide survey of teachers' views”, “A pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of a social marketing-based consumer food safety initiative using observation”, and “The extension programme and food safety education in the USA.” This site includes links to sites on food safety careers, supplementary curriculum for the middle and high school classroom, federal government food safety information, and irradiation. On the web resource page, brief annotations describe each site. There is also a link to the full text of the publication FDA Consumer, 1989 to present. Through a clickable map of the United States (or text listing), this site provides links to the nation's Land-Grant University System with links to departments and programs as well as extension services and experiment stations. Cooperative extensions and experiment stations offer a broad range of information in the areas of food and nutrition. Most of these sites are searchable and many offer full text of publications. This searchable database provides information on over 1,700 food safety research projects and programs. The site can be browsed by subjects, which include food processing and technology, pathogens and contaminants, and pathogen monitoring and detection. There is a wealth of information for the food science educator seeking information on food safety issues.
