Abstract

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, there were 24,669 kidney transplants in 2021.1 Transplant patients take immunosuppressant medication to weaken their immune system to prevent it from attacking or rejecting the transplanted kidney.2 Since the medications weaken the immune system, transplant patients are more vulnerable to developing foodborne illnesses. To minimize the risk of contracting a foodborne illness, it is important for transplant patients and their caregivers to be educated on safe food handling and preparation methods.
