The islands are grouped into four archipelagos-the Society Islands, the Marquises Islands, the Australes-Gambier Islands and the Tuamotu Islands-of which the Society Islands are the most important, having the greatest area, the biggest population and the most advanced economy. The Society Islands are further divided into the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands.
