He holds degrees from Nottingham (B.Sc.) and Bath (Ph.D.) Universities. Previous positions include a Lectureship at Bath University, a Principal Scientific Officer post with the Natural Resources Institute, Chatham, and a Professorship in Commercial Horticulture at Writtle College, in partnership with Essex University. He has a strong interest in tropical horticulture and has, for the last 4 years with Louise Labuschagne, helped run a company in Kenya that specialises in crop protection and the production and use of biological control agents.
