Abstract

The gravity of food insecurity among college students represents a critical issue for society at large and particularly for the students, faculty, staff, and administrators of higher education institutions. This article addresses what it means to be food insecure and the physical, mental, social, and academic toll it takes on students. The potential damage to society illuminates the seriousness of widening socioeconomic gaps throughout the nation. This complex issue builds upon multiple causes, which intensifies the effects, thereby requiring a variety of solutions. As the trend of food insecurity continues to grow, many campus-level solutions offer processes and programs to alleviate shorter-term challenges. These post-factum solutions serve as bandages on existing wounds, while systemic solutions must target the root causes in hopes of avoiding long-term consequences. The time has arrived for all stakeholders in our nation’s higher education system to become informed on this critical issue and step forward as active participants in resolving the issue.
