Abstract
The etiology of inflammatory bowel disorders (IBDs) involves an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. While human genomic analyses and preclinical animal models have revealed critical IBD risk genes and circuits, environmental effects remain poorly defined. In this issue, He etal. (2021) begin to fill this gap by reporting a striking potential of widely used food colorants to cause IBD-like colitis in mice.
