Ciliated protozoans of the family Folliculinidae have the anatomy of the fresh water stentors but more specialized feeding apparatus, associated with their habit of dwelling in secreted tests found attached to a great variety of o'bjects on the bottom of the sea, often near the shores but also in deep water. Since their first discovery on the Danish coast in 1781, they have been put on record as found in many European localities, in the Arctic, and Antarctic, and some parts of the Pacific, but not as yet on any coast 4f Africa or South America, or most of the shores of Asia. Moreover, on the North American continent they are recorded only from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland and North Carolina.
