Abstract

The work presented in this report describes the pattern of polypetides synthesized by the follicular epithelium from the vitellogenic Cecropia moth follicle. The role of the follicle cell product in egg formation is also discussed. The experimental approach involved: (1) incubation of living material with a labeled precursor; (2) isolation of specific parts of the follicle; (3) solubilization of the sample using sodium dodecyl sulfate and dithioerythritol; (4) identification of the labeled polypeptides by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The results show that the follicular epithelium from vitellogenic follicles labels a wide variety of electrophoretically different polypeptides. It is also demonstrated that one labeled product is secreted by the follicular epithelium, taken up by the oocytes, and then packaged into the yolk spheres.
