Abstract

AbstractAging is a severe issue in rural China. Rural elderly demand beliefs derive from folk traditions, blessings for avoiding disasters and worship of gods. They consider folk beliefs as an important spiritual reliance. Folk beliefs have shown great tenacity and social adaptability among rural elderly. Through long-term evolution, it has developed rich forms and contents and still widely exists in Chinese villages. However, due to the duality of its value and meaning, folk beliefs, among the elderly in villages, has been depressed for a long time compare to the national ideology or other mainstream religions. Moreover, in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic, it is suffering new impact, which will influence rural elderly. This research focuses on the folk beliefs of rural elderly group in the context of the epidemic, attempting to find ways to promote the qualities of cultural life and spiritual conditions for the rural elderly in China.KeywordsChinese rural elderlyFolk beliefsCultural and spiritual conditionCOVID-19 epidemic
