Abstract
A study was made of foliage coloration changes and correlation with Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman brood presence in loblolly pine during southern pine beetle attack, near Mt. Olive, N. C. It was found that foliage remained green for a while after southern pine beetle attack, then faded to a yellow, then red, then only a few red needles remained on the tree, and finally the tree was bare. Tables are presented showing that the time interval involved in foliage coloration change varied with time of year. The time the brood remained in beetle-attacked trees also varied with time of year, with the brood remaining in the trees for longer periods during the winter months. Color of foliage was not a good indicator of southern pine beetle brood presence. During some months, the brood emerged from the tree while the crown was still green, while during other months the brood remained in the tree after it was completely bare.
