Abstract

Creating snowflakes is a popular seasonal activity in many classrooms. My interest in this subject was kindled when my wife asked if I knew any ways to make six-pointed snowflakes. As it happens, I did. I also knew of a method for folding five-pointed stars that did not work, and so I began looking for good ways of folding stars and snowflakes with other numbers of points. The geometric connection with this subject lies in devising simple ways of folding angles with measmes that are rational fractions of 180 degrees; the star or snowflake is created by cutting designs in the folded paper.
