Abstract

In this study, sealed pavements were tested to assess the treatment impact on retarding binder aging or rejuvenating in situ binder. Asphalt rheology of extracted binders was used to compare between untreated and treated sections using a paired t-test analysis. A paired t-test statistical analysis of recovered binder stiffnesses showed that polymer-modified asphalt surface sealer (PASS) and COS-50™ treatments did not have a significant impact on binder stiffness. The only significant effect on the rheology of the in situ binder was by EB44 coal tar, which stiffened the binder, and this effect was primarily restricted to the top quarter inch or so of the pavement.
