Abstract

The propagation of femtosecond pulses having gaussian radial intensity distribution behind a focusing lens was calculated using wave optical analysis and numerical integration. The spatial and temporal intensity of the pulses were obtained in the focal plane and its vicinity. The data are presented for a 6 and a 100 fs long pulse which are focused by a BK7 and fused silica lens, respectively. Approximated analytical solution describing the radial and temporal intensity distribution in the focal plane was also found. The conditions of optimal focusing ensuring the highest intensity in the focal plane are given.
