Abstract

Conservative parotidectomy approaches such as extracapsular dissection (ECD) and limited parotidectomy (LP) are now routinely used for the treatment of small, benign, and superficially located parotid tumours. Studies show decreased rates of postoperative complications such as facial paralysis with these techniques compared to the previous standard of complete superficial parotidectomy (CSP).1,2 Despite this, many surgeons feel that ECD’s minimal margins and lack of facial nerve identification may result in tumour disruption.
