Abstract

Recent years have seen a booming development of electronic structure theory for both molecular and materials sciences in China. Chinese researchers have been playing active roles in many sub-fields of quantum chemistry, condensed-matter physics and computational materials science, including, in particular, relativistic quantum chemistry, fragmentation-based linear scaling methods, density matrix renormalization group theory, doubly hybrid functionals, ab initio valence bond theory, to name a few representative works only. The ``Focus on Electronic Structure Theory in China'' special issue of ``Electronic Structure'' presents a snapshot of current active research in electronic structure theory community in China, both in methodological developments and applications to various interesting and frontier systems, with the contributions by researchers from physics, chemistry, and materials science.
