Abstract

Policing a large public campus can be akin to policing a small city, as Lamine Secka, chief of police for San Diego State University, well knows. SDSU, which is home to 37,000 students and sees approximately 45,000–50,000 people on campus per day, is located in the busiest part of San Diego and is a very open campus. “It's very difficult to tell when you're on campus rather than just the surrounding community,” Secka said, an issue that has led to a close working relationship between the SDSU campus police force and the San Diego Police Department.
