Abstract

This week’s issues of Science and Science ’s STKE focus on approaches to analyzing proteins and investigating their function in the proteomic era. Reviews in Science discuss the application of mass spectrometry to protein analysis and proteomics, probing protein dynamics with NMR, and the use of fluorescent probes to study proteins in living cells. A Protocol in STKE uses a photoreactive antagonist to inactivate cell surface receptors with electrophysiological recording to monitor trafficking of a specific type of glutamate receptor. An STKE Review discusses how to avoid problems in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiment interpretation through the use of FRET standards and by considering how changes in the stoichiometry and abundance of FRET donors and acceptors affect FRET analysis.
