Abstract
Through a discussion of our experiences with focus groups in Michigan, we illustrate the application of focus groups in human dimensions research. Focus groups aided in hypothesis generation and development of conceptual frameworks in a project on the deer crop depredation issue, and they provided insights for the design of questionnaires in research on black bear management and ecosystem management. Focus groups have proven to be a useful exploratory tool and are perhaps underutilized in the study of natural resources‐related issues.
