Abstract

The purpose of this work is to report the usefulness of fine needle aspiration biopsy in a 17-year-old female patient with swelling in the left submandibular region. On extraoral examination, skin eruptions in the lower limbs and a nodule on the left submandibular region were observed. The cervical nodule was painless, measuring 1 cm × 1 cm, with a firm consistency and 4 months of evolution. Intraorally there were no clinical changes. Cervical ultrasound was requested and showed a hypoechoic area near the submandibular gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology was done and revealed structures compatible with Taenia sp. including body parts (panoptic stain). The diagnosis of cysticercosis was proposed. The treatment consisted of praziquantel 600 mg (8/8 h) for 15 days with partial remission and improvement of clinical complaints. An excisional biopsy of the lesion was performed, showing a lymph node–like material with suggestive areas of Taenia sp. residual body.
