Abstract

FMVSS 141 requires non-internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to emit audible exterior sound from 0 to 30 kph, with requirements for 1/3-octave band frequency level, overall level and level changes with speed change. This paper studies the results of a single vehicle measured at two different locations. SAE International has conducted a study of several vehicle measured at different locations in order to lead to improvements in relevant SAE standards. This paper investigates test results from a specific vehicle, not part of the SAE study, measured at two different locations in Japan and US, including one location (US) which has three separate certified travel lanes.
