Abstract

The rising demand for continuous and clean electricity supply using renewable energy sources, uninterrupted power supply to responsible consumers and an increase in the use of storage devices in the commercial and utility sectors is the main factor stimulating the growth of the energy storage systems market. Thanks to the unique advantages such as long life cycles, high power density, minimal environmental impact, fast response and voltage stability, flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) is gaining attention recently. This article provides an overview of foreign developments of FESS used at autonomous energy systems with renewable energy sources. We describe the designs of superconducting FESS with magnetic HTS suspension, which were created in MAI, Russia.
