Abstract

A substantial simplification in the calculation of forces due to radiation pressure results from the application of the concepts of wave momentum [P. J. Westervelt, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 23, 312 (1951); J. S. Pyett, ibid. 28, 156 (1956)]. It will be shown that a similar simplification occurs in calculating the torque on an object in a sound field in terms of the flux of angular momentum crossing a closed surface far removed from the scattering object.
