Abstract

In conventional permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor (PMSM) operated irrigation pump system, there exists two problems, namely presence of position sensor and lack of provision to deliver power to local loads. Therefore, a flux-based model reference adaptive system (MRAS) for estimating speed and rotor angle of photovoltaic (PV) fed PMSM operated irrigation pump with local loads is presented here. The flux-MRAS does not depend on speed error and it also does not contain the derivative terms. Thus, it gives an accurate estimate of PMSM speed. While the facility to deliver power to local loads enhances the functionality of system as such a load is essential and inevitable as it appears in the form of lighting load, fan load, provision to charge battery and other miscellaneous load demands of pumping station. The performances of system by using flux-MRAS are obtained under different operating conditions in MATLAB/Simulink. These performances are then validated to by experiments, wherein the detailed test results under varying conditions of solar irradiation are provided.
