Abstract

In the mid-l7th century Galileo Galilei dropped two metal balls from the Leaning Tower of Pisa and showed that they fall at the same rate despite their different masses. In a later version of the experiment, astronaut David Scott dropped a hammer and a feather on the Moon and saw that they hit the surface at the same time. Why did Galileo not choose this more dramatic combination of objects to drop from the Leaning Tower?
